Society of Music Theory

Welcome to the website of the Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory (Dutch: Vereniging voor Muziektheorie, or VvM).

Founded in 1999, the society consists of ca. 115 members, coming principally from the Dutch-speaking region of Europe (the Netherlands and Flanders, Belgium) but also from other parts of Europe and North America.

The basic mission of the VvM is to promote and support the culture of music theory in the lowlands, in all its forms: as a pedagogical practice, as a research pursuit, and as an active voice in the music world today. Music Theory & Analysis, an international and peer-reviewed journal of the VvM (published by Leuven University Press), further seeks to promote the awareness of professional music theory, both within the lowlands and abroad.

Why Join?

If you a teacher, student, researcher, or otherwise enthusiast of music theory active in the Netherlands or Flanders, we greatly encourage you to become a member of the VvM. Similarly, if you are someone living outside of the Netherlands/Flanders but wish to support and/or take part in the activities of our society, we invite you to join.

In addition to bringing together a tight network of colleagues and offering a springboard to our sister European societies, the VvM offers its members free access to all its events, which include regular conferences, study days, and guest lectures/workshops, including the yearly “Music Theorist in Residence” program.

Members also receive a discount to
Music Theory & Analysis. We especially seek to support student members and members in the early stages of their career, through special student workshops and symposium, and through financial support facilitated by the Mart. J. Lürsen prize.
