The Dutch-Flemish Society for Music Theory (Vereniging voor Muziektheorie), founded in February 1999, has three central goals:
- To stimulate music-theoretical research in the broadest sense of the word, both in the Dutch-speaking territories and abroad. Among other things, it aims to do this by organizing annual international conferences, seminars and workshops (e.g., the Music Theorist in Residence), by awarding a publication prize to young authors (Mart J. Lürsen prize), by making available small grants for participation in music-theoretical events, and by collaborating structurally with the journal of Music Theory and Analysis (MTA, former Dutch Journal of Music Theory). In addition it strives to strengthen the bonds with the North-American and European sister societies.
- To serve the interest of music theory and analysis curricula at Dutch and Flemish conservatories and universities and reflect on their structural and pedagogical aspects.
- To optimize contacts with representatives of other fields such as musicologists, composers, and performing musicians.
